The Arabic word "Adhan" means call or invitation. This word is associated with one of the five main pillars of Islam, which is prayer (Salah). Essentially, the Adhan is a loud call made using specific Arabic words and phrases to gather people in the mosque for congregational prayer. While the Adhan is given once for each prayer time, it is announced twice for the Friday prayer (Jumu'ah).
Responding to the call of the muezzin upon hearing the adhan is a Sunnah. In this case, when the muezzin pronounces certain words, the listener is also required to repeat those words. It is narrated from Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in a hadith that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you hear the adhan, say what the muezzin says." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 584)
In another hadith narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "When the muezzin says 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,' if any of you says 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,' then when the muezzin says 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah,' he should also say 'Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah.' Then when the muezzin says 'Ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasulullah,' he should say 'Ashhadu anna Muhammadur Rasulullah.' And when the muezzin says 'Hayya 'ala-s Salah,' he should say 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.' And when the muezzin says 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,' he should say 'Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.' Finally, when the muezzin says 'La ilaha illallah,' he should say 'La ilaha illallah.' If he says all of this with a sincere heart, he will enter Paradise." (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 736)
In another hadith, there is mention of a supplication after the adhan. Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Whoever hears the adhan and makes this supplication: 'O Allah, You are the Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer. Grant Muhammad (peace be upon him) the means and the highest rank, and send him to the praised station You have promised'—on the Day of Judgment, he will be granted my intercession." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 587)
However, it is commonly said that speaking while the mu'azzin is giving the adhan is sinful. Some even claim that speaking during the adhan causes one's faith to leave or that it nullifies 40 years of good deeds. In fact, there is no basis for such statements. There is no mention of this in the hadith. Most scholars also agree on this matter. They state that since responding to the adhan is a Sunnah when one hears it, it is permissible for someone to respond to the adhan. However, speaking will not incur sin.
It is important to remember that just as it is essential to follow the commands of the Almighty Lord to succeed in the Hereafter, it is equally important to adhere to the ideals of the Messenger (peace be upon him) and follow the path he has shown. Allah Himself has commanded in the Holy Quran regarding this: "O Prophet, tell them: If you love Allah, then follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive your sins. And Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Surah Al-Imran, Ayah: 31).
